For 30 years, the Pacific Northwest Shop has been selling food and gifts that are uniquely Northwestern - everything from Mt. St. Helens glass to huckleberry soap, from tribal trinkets to Washington wine, can be found tucked away in this Proctor District shop.
And owner Bill Evans is always on the lookout for new and unique items from local entrepreneurs to add to his inventory. He stocks his shelves with quality, locally made crafts, food, clothing, jewelry and other items - and his customers appreciate it.
"People are focusing on going local," Evans said. "That's so important in our present economy."
Evans said he not only provides locally produced items, but he provides variety and value, as well.
"We don't only stay competitive by our price, but by the variety of products we sell," he said.
Even after 30 years in business, Evans still spends much of his free time seeking out new and unique items to line the walls of his store. He travels around Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia - to stores, trade shows and farmers markets - to find new and uniquely Northwest gifts.
"You're always just looking," Evans said.
While many of his customers are locals, area residents or downtown hoteliers also direct out-of-town guests to the shop. Evans also sells items online and ships them to customers around the country.
He said the key to his success has been customer service and small conveniences - staying open seven days a week, or offering free gift-wrapping, for example.
"It's very important to have those extra services," Evans said.
